The Gripsholm was sold under the name of M/S Sea  for demolition in 2001.

She was made ready for towage in Tampa / Florida and was  towed  towards the Cape of Good Hope for final destination Alang in India. During her towage-voyage the tugboat faced engine problems forcing the tug to proceed to dakar for taking engine spares. During the stay at anchorage the Gripsholm was entered and canibalized by pirates.  Local police and army did not interfered, also being requested for help.

After continuing her voyage, the vessel suffered water ingress  during a storm south of the South African coast.  The local authorities in South Africa strongly rejected to give  permission for entering a port of refuge, but ordered the tugboat to sail into the open sea instead.  A few days later the increasing list of the Gripsholm  resulted in her  final sinking  south of the African Continent.
